02-01-2000 NF-Inferno STORING YOUR MAPS IN A SAFE PLACE -  Make a folder called MAPS under the Pumpkin Studios, or Warzone2100 folder.  Redirect your downloads from the Mplayer pager to this folder, and in this way you can safely keep a copy of each map.  There are two reasons you may want to do this.  First, if your map(s) get corrupted, it is easy to copy them from this folder back into your Warzone folder.  This renders you ready to play again without having to wait for someone to download the map to you again.  Second, there IS a limit to the number of custom maps you can have in the Warzone folder, which is a total of 3 pages in the maps menu.  If you have more than that, Warzone will not launch properly.  (more notes on maps: HOW DO I USE THE CUSTOM MAP YOU SENT ME).

DO NOT SCRIBBLE OR TYPE (CHAT) DURING MAP DOWNLOADS  -  The primary reason you should not to this is that the host (moderator) is transfering multiple copies of the map to the players.  Because of this there is a lag (delay) time between the host and each of the players.  When you type or draw on the screen during this transfer process, data is sent and then misread by the game, resulting in false data being transmitted.  This in turn corrupts the maps of each player except the host.  This is true even if your map was fine to begin with.  When the transfer process begins, it overwrites every player's map, with the exception of the host.  The end result is that everyone has to return to the room they launched from, open the Windows Explorer, and delete the corrupted map from the Warzone2100 folder.  How do you know if the map is corrupted?  Ask the host (mod) what the size of the map is in kilobytes.  For example, if the map is normally 55kb, and your map is only 46kb, then your map is corrupted, and you must delete it before you can play again.

KEEP YOUR OLD RANK -  For those of you who are either changing your name because you were accepted into the NF Clan, or because you just want a new name, the following procedure will let you keep your old Warzone2100 rank.

Open the Windows Explorer and double click on the Program Files folder. Next, double click on these folders in turn; first on the Pumpkin Studios folder, then on the Warzone2100 folder, then on the Multiplay folder, then on the Players folder. You will see a file in the right window with your old name. If you have details and file extensions turned on in the Explorer, and your name is Warlord, for example, then the filename will be "Warlord.sta". Right click on the name, and click on Copy. Now, in the left window (the folders window) right click on the Warzone2100 folder and then click on Paste.  If you have not yet created a new Mplayer account with your new name (ex: NF-Warlord), you should do so now. Go to the following link....

http://www.mplayer.com/home/account/?TAG=SGN

.... Your new clan name should begin with "NF-" and should not include any periods. Underscores "_" and hyphens "-" are ok. Once the new name is created, you must sign off of Mplayer and then sign back on under the new name (ex: NF-Warlord). Once you have done this, your new name will appear in the Players folder as "NF-Warlord.sta".  Now, go to the Warzone2100 folder again, and find your "old" name file (i.e. Warlord.sta). Right click on the file in the right window and click on Rename. Very carefully type in your new name, and then hit Enter. Right click on the new name file again and click on Copy. Finally, right click on the Players folder again, and click on Paste. When the messages pops up asking whether you want to copy over the existing file, click on Yes.  The next time you start up Warzone2100, your old rank will be present with your new name!

HOW DO I USE THE CUSTOM MAP YOU SENT ME -  If you receive a map from someone's pager accept the download then open your Windows Explorer and double click on the My Documents folder.  This is where your pager will send downloaded files by default, or you may choose to send your downloads elsewhere.  Right click on the map file (for example 4c-rush.wdg) and click on copy.  Then in the left window double click on the Program Files folder, then double click on the Pumpkin Studios folder, then right click on the Warzone2100 folder.  Click on Paste.  Your downloaded map has now been copied to the Warzone2100 folder and is ready to play, AND, you have retained an uncorrupted copy in your My Documents folder for later use.

MAKE AN IP ADDRESS ICON ON YOUR DESKTOP - These steps will allow you to create an icon on your desktop that will tell you what your IP address is for your current online session.  Be advised that your IP address CAN change each time you log on to the internet with a modem.  If you have a cable modem, your IP can also change, as these IP's are dynamically assigned as needed.  Knowing your IP address can be very useful for playing games directly over the Internet, without the use of the game servers, such as Mplayer.  You may want to use this option to play a game, particularly when the game server exhibits lag or is otherwise unreliable.  To make the icon do the following...

Right click on any blank space on your desktop, click on New, and then click on Shortcut.  In the "Command Line" box, type in "winipcfg.exe" and press Enter.  Now, notice that the name you just typed (winipcfg.exe) is highlighted in the "Select A Name For The Shortcut" box.  Do not click, but simply type "My IP" and hit Enter.  You now have a gray icon on your screen that says IP in red letters with a blue question mark.  If for some reason this did not work, you may need to type in the entire path in the Command LIne box (i.e. your hard drive letter, a colon, a backslash, windows, another backslash, and then winipcfg.exe).

Now double click on the icon to open the program.  Look at the second box of information, which is titled IP Address.  Normally there are four sets of numbers here, such as 209.79.26.03.  These numbers ARE your IP address.  Notice that each device installed in your machine may have different addresses.  Also notice that each time you sign on the last set of numbers may change.

HOW DO I HOST AN IP GAME - To host an IP game in Warzone2100, give your IP address to those you want to play with, and start the game up (while connected to the Internet of course... and do not start the game through your game server).  If you do not know what your IP address is, read the tip above (MAKE AN IP ADDRESS ICON ON YOUR DESKTOP).  Click on Multiplayer, then on Host, then on Internet.  Select the map and do the other game setup tasks as usual, and click on the "Start Hosting Game" icon (the little computer with all the arrows sticking out of it).  That's it!  Others who have your IP address will now hopefully be able to figure out how to join your game.  If they cannot, have them read the tip below (HOW DO I JOIN AN IP GAME).

HOW DO I JOIN AN IP GAME - To join an IP game in Warzone2100, get the IP address of the person who is hosting the game.  If they do not know what their IP number is, read the tip above (MAKE AN IP ADDRESS ICON ON YOUR DESKTOP).  Make sure you are connected to the Internet, and start your game up (do not start the game in Mplayer, or other game server).  Click on Multiplayer, then on JOIN, then on Internet.  A box will pop up that is labeled "IP Address Or Machine Name".  Type in the host's IP address, and click on the check mark.  A blank window will pop up with a Back arrow on the left, and a Magnifying Glass on the right.  Click on the Magnifying Glass to search for the host's game.  If and when the game is found, the name of the game, etc., will pop up in the window.  Double click on the game to join it.

Build Queing, Attack Queing, & Setting Waypoints :  Unlike any "tactics" that you may obtain through the NF Website, the following is a guaranteed way to improve your skill level on Warzone.

I would like to thank Judge-MAUL for providing NF with this useful skill. Without his help this skill may have remained unknown to the larger majority of NF members. Apparently these features were introduced in the 1.04 WZ patch.

BUILD QUEING: This is where a selected construction unit/s (truck or cyborg) is given up to 8 structures to build, in sequence. This will significantly increase the rate of base building and defenses.

This is done by the following method:

1. Select the construction unit/s (always try and use multiple units).

2. Select the build icon, this will make the "build screen" appear.

3. Select the first structure you want to build, place this. Note that there is a highlighted shape of the structure.

4. As the construction unit/s are building the first structure open the build screen once more. Holding down the "control key" select and place up to 7 more structures, the highlighted areas of previously selected structures will be seen, so you don't overlap structures.

5. Oil resources do not require the build screen, simply select the construction unit/s and holding the control key down, continue to click on up to 8 oil resources. The construction unit/s will continue to build oil derricks on the oil resources.

ATTACK QUEING: This is used for selecting up to 8 targets for any selected "attack" units. This is done by the following method. This is especially useful for vtols and attacking opponents oil resources etc. Its also very useful for "blasting" large holes through defenses with tanks etc.

1. Select the attack unit/s.

2. Select the first target as normal, the holding down the control key, click on up to another 7 targets. A green (could be wrong color, as I'm color-blind) arrow will appear above the selected targets.

SETTING WAYPOINTS: The use of this will enable vtols to get "around" air defense lines, or tanks to sneak past sensors or defenses etc. It can also be used for putting units on patrol, however I have not yet worked out how to "loop" these waypoints. I will sometimes use a bug hover sensor to patrol an area.

1. Have a good look at your opponents defenses, and pick any possible entry routes. Most players will leave their flanks initially unprotected.

2. Select unit/s.

3. Select the first position (a holding area).

4. Holding down the control key left click on the next position and so on for up to 8 waypoints. A green arrow will appear indicating the waypoint. Your units will move from one waypoint to the next waypoint. If they are vtols be sure to set "return" waypoints, or they will return to base on a bee line. This may fly them straight over your opponents air defenses. There appears to be no limit on the length between waypoints.

Well I imagine this will increase the effectiveness of the NF arsenal, and as always, this is what I "sometimes" do and is not set in concrete.

AMENDED NOTES on Build Cues - You can use the Ctrl key to pre-program your your trucks to build your whole base. (while they are doing things on their own you can worry about more important matters. Also while holding Ctrl you can drag and then let go with the left mouse button when building structures such as bunkers that do not need to be spaced apart. You can do this instead of individually clicking every single one.

Problem Solving

I CANT LAUNCH A GAME OR TRANSFER A FILE - Someone really needs to solve this problem and post the solution.  Many on Mplayer have been affected by this quirk, which seems to be connected with Mplayer's server.  The reason we believe the problem lies there is that people who have this problem can launch games via their IP address or on a LAN (network) with no problems.  Yet, while on Mplayer, they are prevented from performing these critical functions.  To make matters more confusing, four people who solved the problem all did so via different means.  One fixed his system by downloading the latest ActiveX updates from Microsoft's web site.  Another fixed his problem by removing his network card, and all its associated protocols.  A third fixed his troubles by buying a new computer, reinstalling the game, and Mplayer.  This latter example is a real mystery, as the people listed in all these examples tried uninstalling the game, and Mplayer (as well as the Mplayer enablers for the game), and then reinstalled everything from scratch.  One of them actually wiped his entire hard drive clean and started from scratch.  This DID NOT fix the problem for any of these people.  Finally, the fourth person replaced his telephone-based modem, and got a cable modem.  Now he can launch games too.  If anyone has a solution, please post it as soon as possible.  You will be helping a lot of people.
